Types of ADHD medication

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or otherwise called ADHD is an attention and behavioral disorder that affects children and some times, adults too. This disorder is extremely difficult to diagnose because most of the symptomatic traits that indicate the disorder are also typical behaviors that most people display at some point or the other. The only difference is that these traits are longer lasting in kinds afflicted with this disorder than the others. Only professionally trained experts can help determine the existence of ADHD. This disorder cannot be cured but with proper ADHD medications and allied treatment, kids can limit the disorder and learn to cope with it.

ADHD medications is always accompanied by behavioral therapy. Every therapy and medication regimen is individualized and can only be determined by professionals. Behavioral therapy will include exercises to inculcate discipline. Instructional exercises to increase and develop attention span, organizational therapy to help develop good habits and also to make them understand good and bad behavior, etc. The behavioral therapy needs supervision from the parents and also from professional therapists. Long term results can be expected through these therapies and as time progresses, kids get used to the regimen, which gradually becomes a way of life.

ADHD medications needs to be determined and prescribed by qualified physicians and even then there is no standard guideline because different children respond differently to the medications. The eventual ADHD medicationsand the dosage will have to be found out by trial and error method by the physician but would generally involve the following three types of treatments:

Anti depressants: Of late, many physicians have begun to stay away from prescribing antidepressants as ADHD medications because of a perceived threat of increase in suicide amongst children but then again, the physician is the best judge and it is best left to them to make the judgment based on the requirement. But, the fact is that antidepressants are very effective as ADHD medication.

Stimulants: ADHD medication can also include stimulants that are given in small but many dosages per day. They help in increasing attention span and can help children in performing tasks better. They can also cause side effects like decreased appetite, stomachache and insomnia<.p>

Non stimulants: This type of ADHD medications is given to children to reduce their hyperactivity. Hyperactivity can lead to uncontrolled behavior and regulated doses of this medication can help them to control their behavior. These medications cause fewer side effects and are considered relative safe for usage.
